Fairyland Ballroom, Roscommon, Co. Roscommon (aka Wagon
Wheel)
The Albert Brothers' Fairyland Ballroom in
Roscommon town opened its doors on November 23rd, 1961 to the sounds of
both the Mighty Avons and Clipper Carlton, two of the biggest showbands in the
country at the time. The ballroom, which
had to compete with the existing Astor Ballroom, which (naturally) objected to
the new ballroom being granted a dance licence. The ballroom was granted its
licence based on a maximum capacity of 1400 dancers. For the next decade, the
ballroom was one of the ballrooms in the west. In early 1971, the ballroom was
taken over by the Associated Ballroom group (led by Con Hynes) and was reopened
as the Wagon Wheel Ballroom on May 8th, 1971 by Big Tom and the Mainliners.
Based on our research (which is limited as the local Roscommon Herald newspaper
is not part of our newspaper archives, it appears the Wagon Wheel operated into
the mid-1970's. It would eventually become a cash and carry (as many ballrooms
did) but by 2019 the ballroom was empty and for rent.
