Pavesi Ballroom, Donegal Town
Donegal's Pavesi Ballroom opened its doors
on Tuesday, December 4th, 1962 to the sounds of Mick Delahunty who
played to a
crowd of over 1,000 dancers. The ballroom sat on a four acre site
previously owned by the Donegal County Council
and was purchased by P. McGowan of Ballybofey. With a 7,800 sq. ft. total area
the dance floor was 2,800 sq. ft. which was large enough,
but still smaller than many other ballrooms being built at the time. The
ballroom played host to all the biggest bands of the
showband era for the next 16 years. In 1978, the ball was purchased by the local
St. John Bosco Club for £55,000. Although used mainly
as a community centre, it would continue to host discos and dances right through
the 1990s. Today it remains a vital part
of Donegal's community providing a variety of services for locals (photo bottom
